First-principles study of enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy obtained by inserting an ultrathin LiF layer at an Fe/MgO interface

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is a key property of magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). To increase areal density MRAM it important to find way enhance the PMA. Recently strong enhancement PMA by inserting an ultrathin LiF layer at Fe/MgO interface was reported [T. Nozaki et al., NPG Asia Materials (2022) 14: 5]. understand origin observed we perform first-principles calculations magetocrystalline energy (MAE) following four kind multilayer structures: Fe/MgO, Fe/LiF/MgO, Fe/FeO/MgO, and Fe/FeF/LiF/MgO. We that MAEs Fe/LiF/MgO Fe/FeF/LiF/MgO structures are almost same as structure, while MAE Fe/FeO/MgO structure less than half structure. The results show major obtained suppression mixing Fe O atoms interface. also in-plane Fe-F coupling gives positive contribution Fe-O negative contribution. useful for designing high-PMA materials.
